Annual Report of the Forest Service, Province of British Columbia, 1947.
The 1947 Report of the Chief Forester, Canadian Province of British Columbia, covers a year of great activity. The total value of production of the forest industries of the province amounted to $282 million as compared with $173 million in 1946. The volume of timber felled increased by more than 30 percent over the cut of the previous year. Air and ground inventory surveys were completed on more than 810,000 hectares (2 million acres). Although reforestation was hampered by shortages of labor and supplies, nearly 4 million trees were planted on 1,980 hectares (4,890 acres) during the year. Weather was good from the standpoint of forest fire protection and the number of fires was substantially below the ten-year average. At its 1947 session the legislature adopted an amendment to the Forest Act providing for the creation of forest management license areas, with the object of facilitating the practice of sustained-yield management of forest resources by the forest industries. This legislation is considered to be of outstanding importance to the development and perpetuation of the province's forest resources.
