Dr Muhammad Nawaz Bhutta, Director General, IWASRI, has always promoted research relevant to problems of irrigated agriculture in Pakistan. As IPTRID had been closely involved in promoting and formulating R&D in Pakistan, Dr Bhutta took the initiative and organized a roundtable meeting to assess future R&D priorities. This initiative is gratefully acknowledged here.
The scientific staff of IWASRI plays a globally recognized role in leading research on waterlogging and salinity. Their contributions in the form of state-of-the art papers were essential for the success of the meeting.
Collaboration with IWMI, the co-organizer of this meeting, proved very valuable for R&D applications of RS and GIS.
The organizers were able to attract high-level national and international experts, government planners and donor representatives to the meeting.
