Accuracy - the closeness of a measured or computed value to its true value (how close the estimated ages are to the true ages).
Exactitude - écart entre une valeur mesurée ou calculée et sa vraie valeur (de combien les âges estimés se rapprochent des âges réels).
Age estimation - the process of assigning ages to fish.
Détermination de l'âge - processus qui consiste à attribuer un âge aux poissons.
Age group - the cohort of fish that has a given age. All ages are assumed to begin on 1 January.
Groupe d'âge - cohorte de poissons d'un âge donné. Tous les âges sont supposés commencer le 1er janvier.
Agreement - the percentage of age-readings that agree with other age-readings or with the modal or mean age.
Accord - pourcentage de lectures d'âge qui sont en accord avec d'autres lectures d'âge ou avec l'âge modal ou moyen.
Annulus (pl. annuli) - one of a series of concentric zones with a certain width on a structure that may be interpreted in terms of age. The annulus is defined as either a continuous translucent or opaque zone that can be seen along the entire structure or as a ridge or a groove in or on the structure.
Anneaux - une parmi une série de zones concentriques ayant une certaine épaisseur sur une structure qui peut être interprétée en termes d'âge. L'anneau apparaît soit comme zone translucide ou opaque continue qui est visible le long de la structure entière soit comme une arête ou une cannelure dans ou sur la structure
Bias - the systematical over or underestimation of age. Bias is regarded as a serious error since fish are allocated to the wrong year class.
Biais (erreur systematique) - sous-estimation ou surestimation systématique de l'âge. Le biais est considéré comme une erreur sérieuse car elle peut conduire à attribuer un âge erroné à un poisson.
Cohort - group of fish of a similar age that were spawned during the same period. Used with age group and year-class.
Cohorte - groupe de poissons du même âge pondus à la même période. Utilisé en relation avec le groupe et la classe d'âge.
Daily increment - an increment formed over a 24-hour period. The term is synonymous with "daily growth increment".
Accroissement quotidien - accroissement formé sur une période de 24 heures. Le terme est synonyme de "accroissement quotidien de croissance".
Discontinued ring - A ring read as an annulus but which cannot be followed over the entire calcified structure.
Anneau discontinu - un anneau discontinu ne pouvant être suivi sur toute la structure calcifiée, néanmoins considéré comme un anneau à part entière.
False ring - a ring, which should not be interpreted as an annual ring, because it is laid down on the calcified structure as a result of some short-term fluctuation in environmental and/or biological parameters.
Faux anneau - un anneau qui ne devrait pas être interprété comme anneau annuel, car sa présence sur la structure calcifiée résulte de fluctuations à court terme des paramètres environnementaux et/ou biologiques.
Growth pattern - in sardine size of annuli vary according to a pattern. This pattern when considered as a stable one can be used to distinguish between true and false annuli for the first year's growth.
Modèle de croissance - chez la sardine la taille des anneaux varie selon le modèle. Quand le modèle est considéré comme stable, il peut être utilisé pour distinguer les vrais des faux anneaux de croissance de la première année.
Modal age - the age for which most readers have a preference. It is recommended that the modal age be based on the age-readings of the experienced readers.
Age modal - c'est l'âge attribué par le plus grand nombre de lecteurs. Il est recommandé que cet âge modal se base sur des lectures d'âge effectuées par des lecteurs expérimentés.
Nucleus - term used to denote the early part of the otolith formed prior to any accessory growth centres. This part of the otolith approximately corresponds to the otolith formed during the larval phase.
Noyau - terme employé pour désigner la partie initiale de l'otolithe formée avant tous les autres centres annexes de croissance. Cette partie correspond approximativement à l'otolithe formé pendant la phase larvaire.
Opaque zone - a zone that restricts the passage of light when compared with a translucent zone.
Zone opaque - zone qui limite le passage de la lumière par opposition à une zone translucide.
Precision - the variability in the age-readings. In the age bias plots the precision is preferably indicated by the mean age ±2stdev, while in general as the coefficient of variation (CV) by age group or as a weighted mean over all age groups.
Précision - variabilité des lectures d'âge. Sur les graphiques de variabilité des lectures, la précision sera de préférence indiquée comme l'âge moyen ±2stdev, alors qu'elle est généralement représentée comme le coefficient de variation (CV) par groupe d'âge ou comme la moyenne pondérée pour tous les groupes d'âge.
Translucent zone - a zone that allows the passage of greater quantities of light than an opaque zone. The term is a relative one because a zone is determined to be translucent on the basis of the appearance of adjacent zones in the otolith. Under reflected light the translucent zone appears dark and the opaque zone appears bright. The term hyaline has been used, but translucent is the preferred term.
Zone translucide - zone qui permet un meilleur passage de la lumière qu'une zone opaque. Cette notion est relative car une zone est déterminée comme translucide par comparaison aux zones adjacentes de l'otolithe. En lumière réfléchie, la zone translucide apparaît en foncé et la zone opaque en clair. Le terme "hyaline" est aussi utilisé, mais on lui préfère "translucide".
Validation - the process of estimating the accuracy of an age estimation method.

Year-class - the cohort of fish that were spawned or hatched in a given year (e.g., the 1990 year-class).
Classe annuelle - cohorte des poissons pondus ou nés au cours d'une même année (par exemple, la classe annuelle 1990).
