APPENDIX 3: SUMMARY INFORMATION ON THE ROLE OF INTERNATIONAL FISHERY ORGANIZATIONS OR ARRANGEMENTS AND OTHER BODIES CONCERNED WITH THE CONSERVATION AND MANAGEMENT OF LIVING AQUATIC RESOURCES

QUESTIONNAIRE

A review is being undertaken of activities relating to regional fishery organizations or arrangements and other bodies (RFBs) concerned with the conservation and management of living resources. It is being carried out under the auspices of the International Institutions and Liaison Service of the FAO, for the information of the Committee on Fisheries that will meet at FAO Headquarters in February 2003.

The review will also be available for the third meeting of RFBs, immediately following COFI, and for broader distribution following these meetings. It is envisaged that the review will be updated again in about 5 years time. I understand that Mr. Watanabe of the FAO Fisheries Department, in his e-mail of 25 July 2002, contacted you and advised that I will be undertaking the study.

The review will build upon the 1996 FIPL Circular 908, “Summary Information on the Role of International Fishery and other Bodies with Regard to the Conservation and Management of the Living Resources of the High Seas”, attached. As you are probably aware, FAO, for many years, has been updating this Circular and it has become a basic reference document on RFBs.

The questionnaire is in two parts:

Your response will contribute to a clearer understanding of the global issues and challenges currently facing RFBs, and will help to identify the scope for cooperative approaches to those challenges. We would be grateful if you could complete and return this questionnaire by 20 September 2002.

The questionnaire can be emailed to [email protected]. Fax and phone numbers, below, are applicable only until 20 September. Please email after that time for new contact numbers if required; questions or comments are welcome at any time.

With sincere thanks in advance for your time and consideration.
