The consumption of nutrients in organic materials, mainly manure, also decreased due to a reduction in the number of animals. Nevertheless, as a consequence of an even larger fall in the consumption of mineral fertilizers, the share of nutrients in manure increased substantially to reach about 50 percent of the total amount of NPK consumed (Table 13).
The consumption of nutrients in manure varies considerably, by a factor 3, from below 40 kg NPK (N+P2O5+K2O) in Dls, Lus and Zpm regions to over 120 kg NPK/ha in Wlp region. This consumption is naturally correlated with the density of animal stock. In fact the consumption of nutrients in manure should be related to the area of arable land and not to the total agricultural land, because in Poland manure is applied almost exclusively on arable land. This would increase the share of nutrients in manure in the total amount of NPK per ha of arable land far above 50 percent.
