Note on provenance tree seed collections

The Second World Consultation on Forest Tree Breeding (Washington, D.C., August 1969) endorsed a previous recommendation by the FAO Panel In Forest Gene Resources that more publicity should be given to provenance seed collections on an international basis and to proposed seed-collecting expeditions. I This is to be done by periodic publication in Unasylva of updated lists of provenance seed collections available and of proposed expeditions. The present note covers mainly eucalypts and tropical pines. In a number of cases countries have been advised individually of the availability of the seed, and some has already, been distributed.

1. Southeast Asia seed collections 1969

This expedition was carried out by the Forest Research Institute (FRI), Canberra, in the first half of 1969, with the help of funds made available by FAO. Collections were organized by the late E. Larsen of FRI and other officers taking part were J.W. Turnbull of FRI and A.L. Cameron of the Forest Department of Papua/New Guinea. I. Esteban and R. Valdez acted as counterparts in the Philippines and the late Dr. Priantjo in Indonesia.

A total of 34 kilogrammes of seed of 19 provenances of Pinus kesiya were collected in natural stands in the Philippines, and 9.7 kilogrammes of seed of 4 provenances of Pinus merkusii from natural stands in Zambales and Mindoro in the Philippines. Three provenances of Eucalyptus deglupta were collected in the Philippines and one in Indonesia.

Seed of the provenances shown in Table 1 is being stored by FRI in Canberra but requests for research quantities of seed should be sent to the Chief, Forest Management Branch, FAO, Via delle Terme di Caracalla, Rome, who will act as coordinator. This seed is available free of charge.

The P. kesiya provenances, together with the seeds from Zambian plantations of known origin, are being used for an international provenance trial organized by the Commonwealth Forestry Institute, Oxford, in association with FAO and FBI. Seeds have already been distributed to 25 participating organizations.

2. Eucalyptus provenance seed collections

Table 2 shows the species of eucalypts of which seed of two or more provenances is available from FRI, Canberra, from collections made up to July 1970. This seed is available on either a sales or an exchange basis. Sample packets containing enough viable seeds (100-1000) for specimen trees or small trials cost 50 cents (Australian). The price of larger quantities will be given on application. When required, phytosanitary certificates are issued free of charge but postage is extra for all seed sent out of Australia. Whenever possible, seed will be exchanged for seed required in Australia for research.

Orders and inquiries should be addressed to: The Director-General, Forestry and Timber Bureau, Canberra, A.C.T. 2600, Australia.

Seed collections of other eucalypt species, Callitris intratropica and Araucaria cunninghamii are planned for 1970/71.

3. Seed of tropical pine provenances available from Commonwealth Forestry Institute

The Commonwealth Forestry Institute, Oxford, England is conducting a three-year programme of seed collection of tropical pine provenances in Central America. R. Kemp is in charge of field collecting operations. The provenances of Pinus oocarpa obtained in the first collecting season in early 1970 did not cover the whole range of the species and it is not intended to issue them for provenance research until a more complete set has been secured by the end of the second collecting season in March 1971.

A series of new collections of the provenances of P. caribaea var. hondurensis was being made between May and August 1970 and should be available for distribution by the end of September or early in October 1970.

Seed is stored in the United Kingdom Forestry Commission seed store on behalf of the Commonwealth Forestry Institute (Table 3). Requests should be sent to A.F. Lamb, Senior Research Officer, Commonwealth Forestry Institute, University of Oxford. Research quantities are normally supplied free of charge, but larger quantities are issued on payment of the cost of the seed and of airfreight charges.

4. Seed of P. caribaea var. bahamensis available through FAO

FAO has purchased 27 kilogrammes of seed of Pinus caribaea var. bahamensis from Andros Island - seed No. 69 (7296) Oxon 1 - in order to make this vanishing provenance available to countries which might otherwise be unable to obtain it. Preference will be given to requests for research quantities of seed. This seed will be supplied free of charge. Airfreight charges will normally be chargeable to the consignee, but in exceptional cases FAO will consider bearing the airfreight charges. The seed is stored in the United Kingdom Forestry Commission seed store, but requests for seed should be sent to the Chief, Forest Management Branch, FAO, Via delle Terme di Caracalla, Rome, Italy.
