The present paper is based on workshops and field tests undertaken by the Centre for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) from 1995 to 1998. CIFOR assembled an international team of forest geneticists to advise on the feasibility and design of criteria and indicators for field-based assessment of conservation of genetic variation as a component of sustainable forest management. Dr. Gene Namkoong was invited to lead the team, but sadly passed away in 2002, before publication of the results. This paper is therefore dedicated to the memory of Dr. Namkoong, recognizing his status as the world’s pre-eminent forest geneticist and his lifetime of contributions to the field. FAO, in concurrence with CIFOR, and noting that four of the authors are standing or former Members of the FAO Panel of Experts on Forest Gene Resources, has undertaken to help in final editing of the publication, and will make the document available in printed form and on-line.
