INTERNATIONAL PROVENANCE TRIALS OF NEEM
Description of international provenance trials of Neem (Azadirachta indica A. Juss) established by collaborators of the International Neem Network
June 2000
This booklet provides description of all the international provenance trials established by collaborators of the International Neem Network.
The objectives are to document the trial establishment and to make available to network collaborators and other interested institutions detailed information on the trials and trial sites. Such information is of crucial importance for the analysis and interpretation of trial results.
For each trial, the location, climate, topography, soil and natural vegetation type are described. The description also covers information on trial design, establishment and management and protection status. Location maps and trial design maps are presented whenever available.
The booklet is divided into four main sections. Following a brief introduction to the International Neem Network in Chapter 1, Chapter 2 holds a summary of the trial establishment and a status on the trials. Chapter 3 provides a list of National Focal Institutes (NFI), i.e. institutions in charge of the trials. Chapter 4 has the actual descriptions of the trials and trial sites, with trials being presented in alphabetical order by country.
The booklet has been prepared with contributions from all network collaborators. The information was compiled by C.P. Hansen, Geert Lunde and M. Joergensen of the Danida Forest Seed Centre.
Further information on the International Neem Network and its activities can be obtained from the global co-ordinator of the network:

The International Neem Network was established in 1993 with the long-term objective to improve the genetic quality and adaptability of Neem and to improve its utilisation. The network collaborators have undertaken activities in relation to provenance exploration, seed collection and exchange and have established international provenance trials. In addition, the network collaborators have undertaken research in seed physiology and technology, genetic diversity and reproductive biology, as well as studies on variation in chemical compounds.
National institutes in 21 countries are collaborating in the network together with a number of international organisations and projects. The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) is entrusted the global co-ordination of the Network activities. The network has to date issued the following publications related to its activities:
The publications are available on request from the global co-ordinator (contact address given in Preface).
During 1993 and 1994 seed sources were surveyed and documented by Network members throughout the natural range of the species and in areas of introduction. A training workshop was organised in July 1994 in Panampally, India, to familiarise Network collaborators with the approved procedures for seed source descriptions and seed collection.
25 seed sources were collected during 1995 following common guidelines approved by the Network. In all cases, seeds were collected from at least 25 trees, 100 meters apart. Immediately after collection and appropriate processing, the seeds were rapidly dispatched to other Network members for establishment of international provenance trials. Nursery production of seedlings also followed common procedures and the nursery phase proved to be successful in most countries. The seedlings have been used to establish the international provenance trials documented in the present booklet.
Table 1 summarises the trial establishment. A total of 38 international provenance trials have been established in 17 countries in SE Asia, Africa and Central America. 9 of the trials (ref. Table 1) did not survive the establishment phase for various reasons. Hence, at the time of printing (June 2000), 29 international provenance trials of Neem were existent.

Table 1 Overview of established international Neem provenance trials. Trial status as of November 1999: _:Trial existent; _: Trial has been abandoned
Field assessment of trials is in progress following common guidelines agreed by the Network collaborators (ref. the 1997 International Neem Network publication: Assessment of International Provenance Trials). At a later stage, the network may consider to undertake a joint overall analysis of the assessment data, i.e. to prepare regional and global analysis.
