CAP Tool 7. Secret Ranking of Microproject Ideas

Objective:

To make a ranked list of microproject ideas that will be used as a priority list for further planning.

How to facilitate

1. Explain the objective of the ranking.

2. Ask different participants from the community to draw a simple picture or symbol explaining the different microproject ideas on a small piece of paper, and attach these symbols next to the respective row of the completed PAPP Matrix. It is important that everybody understands the symbols, so read out the different microproject ideas and show the picture belonging to them.

3. Having in mind the different microproject types, explain to which category each microproject belongs and what type of community group would be likely to be formed for each of the proposed microprojects (see CAP tool 8 for more information on this).

4. Mention that they will have a free choice and that there will be more opportunities to plan microprojects in the future. Explain that experience from elsewhere has shown that it is better to start with those types of microprojects for which they can take responsibility more easily in terms of planning and implementation. However this is only a suggestion and the final decision will remain with the community.

5. Explain that everybody has 3 votes and ask them to come to the chart one by one. Everybody is invited to vote by making a dot with a big pencil next to those proposed micro-projects that she/he wants to address in the Micro-Project Planning. The facilitator and note-taker assist people who need help. Please ensure that the ranking is done confidentially and that nobody can see how the individuals have voted!

6. Count all the votes and write down the rank for each micro-project proposal and announce the result. Explain that Facilitation team will review their proposals and give them some feedback the next day. Briefly explain how the CAP workshop will proceed the next day.

7. Fill in the results in the Documentation sheet of the PAPP MATRIX.

Duration of this task: 20 minutes

Material needed: Filled in PAPP MATRIX, small pieces of paper for the drawings, big pens (markers); PAPP MATRIX Documentation sheet.
