Abstract

The MEDRAP II second Network Steering Committee meeting took place in Cairo, Egypt on December 16–17, 1991.

Among the participants of all the Member and Associated countries, it was noted the participation of Greece for the first time.

After review of the project 1991 activities and the progress national reports presented respectively by the Project Coordinator and the National Coordinators, it was reiterated the importance of having a regional information network system. The recommendations of the Seminar on SIPAM were adopted. The meeting considered the proposal of the representative of France to secure funds from the French Trust Funds under the FAO, to procure basic EDP equipment to 4 countries in order to be used as terminals.

The meeting considered the submitted budget reflecting updated expenditures and commitments. As the recruitment of UN Volunteers seemed to be difficult because of unavailability of appropriate skills, it was decided to cancel the position.

The 1992–93 programme of activities was also considered and amended according to proposed changes.

Concerning the associated countries, the Project Coordinator was requested to pursue contacts with the Italian and Spanish Authorities and E.C. to contribute to the Project.

It was agreed to establish an Ad-Hoc Committee composed of technical and legal experts to elaborate a legal document and to identify the mechanism of functionning of the Post-MEDRAP cooperation.

Note from the reviser

The revision and publication of this document could only be done a long time after the closure of the project. This has led to some difficulties in finalising the documents and implementing corrections, because authors and contributors as well as some of the original material or files were no longer available.

Therefore contributions from participants and session papers annexed to most of the documents were left in their original form. No language corrections were introduced, the content was not modified and left under their respective authors' responsibility.

Considering the above, we hope that the reader will understand that a standard of publication could not be maintained on a level as high as we would have liked it to be.
