WEB SITES

Access to Global Online Research in Agriculture (AGORA). This is an initiative by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations to provide free or low-cost access to major scientific journals in agriculture and related biological, environmental and social sciences to public institutions in developing countries. Launched in October 2003, AGORA provides access to over 400 journals from Blackwell Publishing, CABI Publishing, Elsevier, Kluwer Academic Publishers, Lippincott, Williams and Wilkins, Nature Publishing Group, Oxford University Press, Springer-Verlag and John Wiley & Sons, and more publishers will be invited to participate. Potential users are required to register with FAO to gain passwords to AGORA. Universities, colleges, research institutions, agricultural extension centers, government offices and libraries in countries with an annual GNI per capita per annum of US$1 000 or less as of 31 December 2000 can freely access AGORA services. African Forum on Science and Technology for Development (AFSTD). Established by the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD), AFSTD promotes the application of science and technology for economic growth and poverty reduction. It provides NEPAD and the African Union high level advice by conducting multi-stakeholder dialogues, building strong political and civil society constituencies, promoting the application and good practices of science and technology in the areas of policy development and implementation, improving bilateral and multi-lateral cooperation, articulating Africa’s needs through international negotiations, and formulating projects, guidelines and recommendations. Agroforestry Newsline is a free E-mail publication that provides regular updates from the Association for Temperate Agroforestry (AFTA). http://www.aftaweb.org/

Buffer$ - Analyses of the Costs-Benefits of Conservation Buffers. This is a new computer program developed by the USDA National Agroforestry Center to assist landowners and planners in answering financial questions on windbreaks, riparian strips and other conservation buffers. Based on MS Excel, the program can calculate potential income from cost-share programs, agroforestry specialty products and other economic opportunities. Costs can also be compared between buffers and cropping alternatives, and the economic impacts of buffer removal. Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF). CPF consists of heads of relevant international organizations, invited by the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (ECOSOC), to support the work of the United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF) in terms of national implementation, monitoring, assessment and progress reporting on proposals for action. http://www.fao.org/forestry/cpf

Cooperative Research Centre for Sustainable Production Forestry. The Centre conducts research and training in tree genetic improvement, sustainable management and resource protection. Research is concentrated on plantation species such as Eucalyptus nitens (Shining gum) and Eucalyptus globules (Tasmanian Blue Gum) in the temperate and Mediterranean environments; and Pinus elliotti (Slash Pine), Pinus carribea (Carribean Pine) and Araucaria cunninghamii (Hoop Pine) in subtropical environments. EarthPrint. Initially launched in 1999 as the official online bookshop of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), EarthPrint now offers publications from the United Nations (UN), International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), International Service for National Agricultural Research (ISNAR), The World Health Organization (WHO), Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), Tata Energy Research Institute (TERI), International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP), Asian Development Bank (ADB), Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), International Plant Genetic Resources Institute (IPGRI), International Water Management Institute (IWMI), Leadership for Environment and Development International Inc. Farm Woodland Forum. Formerly known as the UK Agroforestry Forum, the Farm Woodland Forum provides information on farming with trees from research on alley cropping and silvopastures practices appropriate in the UK and other temperate regions. Summaries of their annual meetings and its UK Agroforestry Forum Newsletter can be viewed through their web site at http://www.agroforestry.ac.uk/

Florida Extension Publications on Agroforestry. The University of Florida Cooperative Extension provides several online publications describing agroforestry practices: (1) Agroforestry: options for landowners, (2) Alley-cropping combinations for the southeastern USA, (3) Estimating the profitability of your non-timber forestland enterprise, and (4) Farming in the forests of Florida. http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/TOPICAgroforestry

International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI). IFPRI conducts research on economic growth and poverty alleviation in low-income countries, improvement of the wellbeing of poor people and sound management of the natural resource base that supports agriculture. In addition to its policy research, IFPRI also disseminates its findings through its divisions on communication, development strategy and governance, environment and production technology, food consumption and nutrition, markets, trade and institutions and the 2020 vision initiative. http://www.ifpri.org/

International Organization for Plant Information (IOPI). IPOI was initiated in 1991 by an international group of botanists and computer scientists. International Water Management Institute (IWMI). IWMI activities focus on the sustainable use of water and land resources in agriculture and the water needs of developing countries. Research revolves around integrated water resource management for agriculture, sustainable smallholder land and water management, sustainable groundwater management, water resource institutions and policies and water, health and environment. It has research projects in 21 countries in Asia and Africa with work being coordinated through the regional offices in India, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka and Thailand. http://www.cgiar.org/iwmi/

National Botanical Institute (NBI). NBI was formed through the integration of the National Botanic Gardens and the Botanical Research Institute in 1989. Its aims to conserve and study southern Africa flora by assessing botanical research and conservation needs, developing programs to meet these needs, collecting and managing plants in national botanic gardens and herbaria, conducting research on indigenous plants and endangered plant species and promoting appreciation and relevance of plants to the public. http://www.nbi.ac.za/aboutnbi.htm

NHBS Mailorder Bookstore. For 15 years, this UK-based company has been providing natural history, environment and science books to individuals, libraries and organizations around the world. Visitors to their web site at http://www.nhbs.com/can search or browse BookNet, the NHBS Web Catalogue, with over 85 000 titles on all environmental subjects, take advantage of the special nhbs.com online offers, subscribe to the NHBS alert and request a sample copy of the NGBS Catalogue - a newspaper-style catalogue issued each April and October.

Plantbreeding.org. This is a non-profit web site dedicated to news, events and discussions on plant breeding. Supportive readers, when finding something interesting online, submit brief synopsis and hyperlinks to the original web site/story. It also includes job postings, weekly reading materials of the University of Wisconsin Journal Club, convenient links to journals and analysis tools, polls and more. Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE). SARE helps advance farming systems that are profitable and environmentally sound through a nationwide research and education grants program. SARE was created in 1988 as part of the US Department of Agriculture’s Cooperative State Research, Education and Extension Service. It funds projects, conducts outreach and maintains an on-line database of projects. The 14-minute video entitled "Innovations in agriculture: an introduction to the SARE program" describes how sustainable agriculture is being researched and tested on farms and ranches across the US. http://www.sare.org/about/
