A FRAMEWORK FOR PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SECTOR ACTIVITY IN AQUACULTURE IN GREECE

Description of activities/sectors

The development, control and support of aquaculture involves a broad range of activities by many public and private sector groups and individuals.

The following is intended to serve as a framework for organizing this work, and to be appropriate to Greece's mixed economy.

Central Government1

(1A)Articulation of a national policy; design and implementation of a national strategy; establishment and servicing of a National Aquaculture Coordination Committee (NACC).
(1B)Promulgation, enforcement and monitoring of appropriate national legislation; allocation of licences; establishment of consultation procedures.
(1C)Provision of basic physical infrastructure, including roads, ferries and communications.
(1D)Establishment of basic and applied research programmes; support for research institutes and universities, research and development projects, and central demonstration units.
(1E)Collection, storage and dissemination of information for producers, extension workers and others; public relations; export promotion publications; conferences; exhibitions.
(1F)Graduate, postgraduate, technical, management and practical education and training; provision of a national extension service; channels for international and national sources of technical assistance.
(1G)Management of national grant and loan schemes, and taxation and fees; shareholding in development companies.
