APPENDIX E
SEEPAGE FLOW THROUGH DIKE

This topic is supplemental to the information discussed in Section 5.5.3, Chapter 5.

The potential and actual seepage flow through dikes during site selection and after pond construction are important to evaluate for construction and management purposes. Most coastal soils are clayey and are generally of uniform size soil (homogeneous). The rate of seepage in a dike built with homogeneous soil material can be calculated by the following Casagrandre's formula (Katoh, 1982).

A. When dike is on permeable foundation (Fig. E.1), seepage is the sum of seepage through the dike and through the foundation beneath the dike.

Where: q =seepage flow per cm length of dike (cm3/hr)
K =permeability of coefficient of the dike (cm/hr)
K1 =permeability coefficient of the permeable foundation (cm/hr)
h =height of water level, cm
W =effective width of dike, cm

B. When dike is on impermeable foundation (Fig. E.2), the equation becomes:

From the two formulas, measurement of the permeability of the soil material for diking and the foundation, and the thickness of foundation, should be done using acceptable engineering methods. The height of water level in the pond and the effective width of dike must also be determined.

The effective width of dike can be calculated by referring to Figs. E.1 and E.2.

Example E.1

Referring to Fig E.1, determine the rate of seepage if the permeability values of dike and foundation are 1.7 cm/hr and 1.4 cm/hr, respectively. The depth of impermeable soil layer below the dike is 2.0 m. The dike has a top width of 2.5 m and a side slope of 1:1 on the pond side and 1.5:1 at the opposite side. The height of dike is 1.6 m and the depth of water in the pond is 1.3 m.

Fig. E.1

Fig. E.1 Seepage flow in dike of homogeneous material placed on shallow permeable foundation
(After Katoh, 1980)

Fig. E.2

Fig. E.2 The seepage line drawn in the dike with homogeneous material placed on impermeable foundation
(After Katoh, 1980)

Solution:

(a) The base of dike, b is:

b= 2.5 + 1 × 1.6 + 1.5 × 1.6
= 6.5 m

(b) The value of c from Figure E.1 is:

c= h, the depth of water in the pond for side slope 1:1
c= 1.3 m

(c) The effective width of dike, d, is:

w= b - c + 0.3c
= 6.5 - 1.3 + 0.3 × 1.3
w= 5.59 m

(d) The rate of seepage is:

 = 0.255 + 0.651
q= 0.908 cm3/hr (per cm length of dike)
