10. SUMMARY OF RECOMMENDATIONS

  1. Studies on the abundance and distribution of fish seed

It is necessary to gather precise information on the seasonal abundance and distribution of the seed of cultivable fishes and oysters by conducting detailed studies for a period of one complete year.

  2. Construction of earthen ponds

The construction of ordinary earthen ponds on the coast for cultivating fish will not be an economically viable proposition.

  3. Experimental studies on oyster culture

A three year programme of experimental oyster culture may be taken up, which will include investigations on the different types of cultch material to be used, nature and variations in spat settlement, and intensive culture of oysters, adopting off-bottom culture methods, in specially demarcated areas of the Gulf.

  4. Experimental, culture of perches

Experiments on limited culture of perches in cages and ponds may be taken up if the seed resources are found to be adequate.

  5. Establishment of an aquarium

A compact aquarium complex may be established at Aqaba, which while catering to the experimental and training needs, will also serve as a public and tourist attraction.

  6. Training

One Officer with necessary basic qualifications should be sent to a foreign institution for advanced training in modern aquaculture methods. Another junior officer may be sent to an aquarium in another country to get training in methods of aquarium maintenance and management.
