PREPARATION OF THIS DOCUMENT
There is a frequent need for reliable methods of approximating the potential fish production
of inland waters for development and management purposes. Such methods have been elaborated
for lakes and one of them, the Morpho-Edaphic Index, has been evaluated in CIFA/OP 1 of this
series. Evaluation of potential from rivers has, however, been neglected to date and this
paper aims at provoking discussion and further work in this field by presenting some general
and theoretical considerations of a possible approach whereby the fish production from rivers
may be estimated.
PREPARATION DU PRESENT DOCUMENT
Des méthodes fiables sont souvent nécessaires pour évaluer, même approximativement, la production
halieutique potentielle des eaux continentales aux fins de développement et d'aménagement.
De telles méthodes ont été mises au point pour les lacs et l'une d'entre elles,
l'Indice morpho-édaphique, a fait l'objet du premier document de cette série - CIFA/OP 1.
Cependant, jusqu'à présent, on a négligé d'évaluer le potentiel des cours d'eau; le présent
document se propose donc de susciter un débat et de nouvelles études dans ce domaine en
exposant quelques considérations générales et théoriques sur une méthode possible d'estimation
de la production halieutique des cours d'eau.
