The genus Prosopis is of considerable potential for planting in arid
areas for improvement of agricultural environment and rural living. Several
species are capable of providing valuable fodder and fuelwood, in addition
to their protective functions of soil stabilization and shelter. In the past
there has been much confusion regarding the taxonomy of the genus. The recent
publication of the authoritative “Monograph of the genus Prosopis” by the late
Professor Arturo Burkart of Argentina (Journal of the Arnold Arboretum Vol.
57 Nos. 3 and 4 1976) will therefore be of great interest to arid-zone
foresters and an essential basis for future provenance research. |
