2. EXISTING INFORMATION SYSTEMS

The existing information systems concerned with aquaculture are FAO's Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Information System (ASFIS), the U.S. National Aquaculture Information System (NAIS), FAO's International Information System for the Agricultural Sciences (AGRIS) and the Current Agricultural Research Information System (CARIS). They all do attempt some coverage of bibliographic information, but none of them is able to do it adequately at present. ASFIS with its output of the Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts, has greater coverage of the subject and although incomplete is more widely used by fishery scientists and aquaculturists. However, none of them provide the specialized developmental information that is needed for the worldwide expansion and intensification of aquaculture that the Aquaculture Development and Coordination Programme (ADCP) attempts to promote.
