l. INTRODUCTION

This document presents selected planning and engineering data on fish boxes and containers used in fish handling and marketing.

The purpose of this document is to provide the industry, especially in developing countries, with a practical, up-to-date set of easy reference data of a technical and economic nature, particularly data required by those concerned with planning and costing of fisheries industrial development programmes and those assessing the technical feasibility of relevant projects.

The suitability for use by governmental offices responsible for various aspects of commercial fisheries, specialized schools, training courses, etc., is also taken into consideration.

This document does not pretend to include all the relevant data on fish boxes and containers. The limited funds made available for this study has made it necessary to cover parts of the material less deeply than would be desirable.

Some information such as price of materials is subject to rapid change so this report aims more at describing general concepts. More specific information in these areas can be sought by people using the report.

The publication is not the result of original research, but is based on information available from manufacturers of equipment, from previously published material by numerous organizations, particularly FAO of the UN, Norwegian Standard Organization, Directorate of Fisheries, Norway and some foreign institutions.
