FOREST GENETIC RESOURCES CENTRE IN MEXICO

(Centro de Genética Forestal, México)
Mexican pines represent a renewable natural resource of high importance in Mexico. About 60% of the species constitutes the base for the national forest industry and the rest are used for e.g. collection of resin and pine-nuts, or as ornamentals.
Despite their importance, very little is known about the biology, variation and variation patterns, cultivation and silvicultural treatments of many of the species.
To remedy this situation, the University of Chapingo (Universidad Autónoma de Chapingo) and the University of Veracruz (Universidad Veracruzana) established in November 1984 “El Centro de Genética Forestal” with the objectives to undertake and promote basic and applied research on forest genetic resources, their improvement and use in Mexico; and international cooperation.
Recent work includes a publication, “Descripción Botánica de los Pinos Mexicanos” by Dr. Teobaldo Eguiluz Piedra (1985), who is the Director-General of El Centro de Genética Forestal.
