PREPARATION OF THIS DOCUMENT

During discussions on international riverine watershed management at the second meeting of the Latin American Inland Fishery Commission (Santo Domingo, 1981), the Commission identified the major points to be studied by the Working Party on Fishery Resources in an attempt to reduce the negative effects of dam construction in the region's large catchment basins. One of these points concerned the design and installation of structures to help fish migrate. The subject was dealt with in later meetings of the Working Party and the data available at regional level, contained in this paper, were compiled by a consultant engaged by FAO to put the Commission's recommendation into effect. The paper was edited by FAO's Inland Water Resources and Aquaculture Service.

Another publication on the same subject dealing with the experience in the USSR, by D.S. Pavlov, is published as FAO Fisheries Technical Paper, No. 308, under the title: Structures assisting the migrations of non-salmonid fish: USSR.

Structures assisting the migrations of non-salmonid fish: Latin America. COPESCAL Technical Paper. No. 5. Rome, FAO. 1989. 41p.
ABSTRACT
This technical paper summarizes data available in Latin America on structures designed to help fish surmount the obstacles which hinder their migrations and which are due to dam construction. It analyses installation designs, modes of operation and efficiency and discusses the reasons on which the decision to construct these facilities rather than use other fishery management methods, such as the stocking of migratory species were based. Reference is made to the existing laws which require fish pass structures to be built in dams.
