Bovine health and productivity on the north coast of Colombia

The first part of this article, which examines the relationship between cattle management, health and performance, was published in World Anim. Rev., 68. The investigation set out to examine and quantify the constraints to dairy and beef cattle productivity on the north coast of Colombia. Disease constraints were compared with those resulting from environmental, nutrition and management conditions on 104 farms. Samples revealed a 42 percent incidence of Leptospira interrogans, 32 percent of Infectious Bovine Rhinotracheitis (IBR), 63 percent of Bovine Virus Diarrhoea (BVD), 2.6 percent of brucella and 1.5 percent of leucosis. Blood smears revealed a 32 percent incidence of Anaplasma marginale, 28 percent of Trypanosoma spp. and 0.7 percent of Babesia sp.
