The production of fur-bearing animals such as mink, nutria, fox, filch, chinchilla and rabbit is a multimillion-dollar industry which provides employment for a large number of people, particularly in developing countries. However, the animals raised can contract a wide range of infectious and non-infectious diseases that may be fatal if a proper standard of husbandry is not practiced. This article draws attention to the significance of zoonotic diseases transmitted by fur-bearing animals.
