The project was successfully completed in December 1991 with pilot activities conducted in eight countries: Honduras, Jamaica, Kenya, Malawi, Morocco, Tunisia, Rwanda and Thailand. Important output-oriented activities, following a PEDAEX operational process based on an SEC conceptual framework, were undertaken in the eight countries. These activities included among others: PEDAEX planning and strategy development workshop, Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice (KAP) baseline surveys, establishment of PEDAEX task forces/steering committees, workshops on PEDAEX strategy planning, message design & multi-media materials development, extension workers training on the use of specifically-designed PEDAEX extension/training support materials, and management of PEDAEX field implementation. Process evaluation and summative evaluation studies of PEDAEX activities were also conducted in the eight countries. Evaluation results and lessons learned from PEDAEX project experiences were shared in an international workshop on "PEDAEX Experience Sharing and Results Demonstration" held in Meknčs, Morocco in November 1991. A summary of these main activities can be seen in Figure 4-47.
The intended project objectives have been fully achieved. Figure 4-48 shows a summary of Project's Performance Indicators and Outputs. The PEDAEX strategy and methodology, as well as extension/training support materials developed and tested by the project appeared to be appropriate, effective and useful. In some countries, it was also felt that PEDAEX activities helped to revitalize, and enhance the effectiveness of, the extension service. Understanding on how population-related aspects can positively or negatively affect farm families' agricultural productivity and well-being in particular, and food security in general, is now considered a critical factor in facilitating the effectiveness of extension and training activities for sustainable and environmentally-sound agricultural development.
Follow-up PEDAEX activities are underway, including plans for wider-scale PEDAEX replications. Due to the participatory approach in developing PEDAEX strategy, methodology, and extension/training support materials, and the emphasis in training of local trainers and extension officers, PEDAEX activities also seem more likely to be sustainable and institutionalized. More specifically, during the project period, the following results were accomplished:
International Workshop on "Planning and Strategy of Integrating Population Education into Agricultural Extension Services" held in Rome in May 1987 with participants from 10 countries.
PEDAEX pilot activity project proposals for 8 countries developed and approved for funding by UNFPA.
PEDAEX task forces/steering committees established in 8 countries.
Baseline/KAP studies conducted in 8 countries.
Workshops on "PEDAEX Strategy Planning, Message Design and Extension/Training Materials Development" held in 8 countries for 191 participants.
Various specifically-designed prototype PEDAEX extension/training support materials pretested, revised and reproduced in 8 countries.
A total of 286 extension officers in 8 countries trained in management of PEDAEX field implementation and use of multi-media PEDAEX extension/training support materials.
PEDAEX field implementation is now carried out in 8 countries' and as of Dec. 1991, it was reported that an estimated total of at least 102,000 farmers and/or their family members had been reached.
Three travelling seminars/process evaluation activities conducted in four regions (Asia' Africa, the Near East and Latin America & Caribbean).
Summative evaluation studies of PEDAEX activities conducted in 8 countries.
International Workshop on "PEDAEX Experience Sharing and Results Demonstration" held in Morocco in Nov. 1991 with participants from 16 countries.
