DANIDA FOREST SEED CENTRE CONTINUES ITS SERVICES TO DEVELOPING COUNTRIES |
| Since the establishment in 1969 the DANIDA Forest Seed Centre has been administered in project periods of 3–5 years. An external review was carried out in 1993 and as a result a new 5 year project period starting from Jan. 1995 was approved by the Danish Government. DFSC provides training consultancies and other services backed by applied and practically oriented research. It supports the development of expertise in genetic improvement, gene conservation and seed procurement in developing countries through the following two programmes: |
| Base Programme: General activities (publications, library, training, seed bank); research and development activities within seed biology and technology (testing, storage methods, methods and equipment for scarification) and within tree improvement and gene resource conservation (multipurpose tree species for arid and semi-arid zones, teak and gmelina international provenance trials, seed and conservation stands of Central American pines, provenance trials of Pinus merkusii and P. kesiya). |
| Project Support Programme: Advisory services, training courses and short-term consultancies for 7 national tree seed projects in the following countries: Tanzania, Nicaragua, Nepal, Sudan, Ethiopia, Uganda and Indonesia. The programme also includes one regional project based in Costa Rica. |
