The FAO Technical Papers are available through the authorized FAO Sates Agents or directly from Sales and Marketing Group, FAO, Viale delle Terme di Caracalla, 00100 Rome, Italy.
Wheat and barley are both staple foods for the people of the Near East but, with the exception of Turkey, all the countries in the region are dependent on imports to supplement their own production of these cereals.
A significant contributory factor to this shortfall is the damage caused to crops by sunn pest - one of the most important pests of wheat and barley in the Near East. The introduction of successful pest control measures would, therefore, lead to more sustainable cereal production and improve the food security of the large population dependent on wheat and barley in the region. In 1993 an Expert Consultation was organized jointly by the FAO Regional Office for the Near East and the International Centre for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) and took place at the ICARDA premises in Aleppo, the Syrian Arab Republic. The objectives of the consultation were to assess the sunn pest problem and develop strategies for the effective management of the pest through the development of a programme of integrated pest control based on research findings from throughout the region and the rest of the world.
This publication draws together the papers presented at that meeting by technical officials from the Near East and invited speakers from Canada, France, Romania and the Syrian Arab Republic.
