2. Objectives of the Workshop

The aim of the Workshop was to bring together fishery workers and administrators working in the field of recreational fisheries from Central and Eastern European member countries of EIFAC, including Austria, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Germany, Romania and Slovakia. Its focus was to define the status and particular problems of recreational fisheries in Central and Eastern Europe.

The main aspects examined were:

• current status and trends in recreational fisheries
• interactions between recreational and commercial fisheries/aquaculture
• influences from other sectors and limitations on recreational fisheries
• socio-economic aspects of recreational fisheries
• criteria for management of recreational fisheries
• priorities for research and development including education and training
• the future of recreational fisheries over the next decade
• contribution of recreational fishery to food supply

The Workshop also considered aspects of the recreational fisheries in Central and Eastern Europe which need to be reflected in the Code of Good Practice for Recreational Fishing to be developed by EIFAC.
