BURKINA FASO:
Reflecting regular and well-distributed rains, crops are developing satisfactorily. Although generally below last year’s level, precipitation in August was regular and well distributed, notably during the second and third dekads. Abundant rains also covered most parts of the country, except the east, in early September. In the south, south-west and the west, millet and sorghum are in the elongation/heading stage. In the centre-east, the north and the Sahel region, they are in the elongation stage. In the centre (Ouagadougou), centre-north (Boulsa) and the east (Bogandé, Sebba), the growing season has been delayed due to dry conditions in several areas; plantings continued in places up to mid-August. Pastures have regenerated satisfactorily, except in Sebba in Yagga province. Water reserves are well replenished. The government organised on 5 September a meeting with donor representatives to present information on the status of the growing season, indicating that some pockets registered dry conditions which led to replantings up to August.
Grasshopper infestations have been reported on 16 700 hectares, notably in the north and the east. Treatments are underway.
