Normal rains have resumed in May following a severe drought due to El Niņo which severely affected the important paddy crop. Imports would be required to meet the deficit in production resulting from the lower than normal yields obtained. The foreign exchange earner banana crop was equally affected. The weight of the fruit is reported to be insufficient for export.
