ABSTRACT

The Working Party on the Assessment of Marine Fishery Resources held its seventh session in Belize City, Belize, from 2 to 5 December 1997. The primary objective of this session was to contribute to a comprehensive assessment of the nature and status of fisheries in the region, with a view to assisting, through provision of information, the Western Central Atlantic Fishery Commission in its consideration of its future role and the prospects for enhancing cooperation in the region. The specific role of this Working Party was to consider the nature, distribution and status of the living marine resources of the region and, based on these, to advise the Commission on future roles that it should consider in order to realize effective, sustainable utilization and management of the resources. This task was completed and substantive recommendations, as detailed in this report, put forward for consideration by the Commission.

RESUMEN

El Grupo de Trabajo de la COPACO sobre la Evaluación de los Recursos Pesqueros Marinos celebró su séptima reunión en la Ciudad de Belice, Belice, del 2 al 5 de diciembre de 1997. El objetivo principal de esta reunión era contribuir a la evaluación completa de la naturaleza y situación de la pesca en la región, con vistas a prestar asistencia, mediante el suministro de información, a la Comisión de Pesca para el Atlántico Centro-Occidental en el examen de su futura labor y las perspectivas para intensificar la cooperación en la región. La función específica de este Grupo de Trabajo era examinar la naturaleza, distribución y situación de los recursos marinos vivos de la región y, sobre esta base, asesorar a la Comisión sobre las futuras funciones que debería tener en cuenta para conseguir una utilización sostenible y ordenación eficaz de los recursos. Se realizó esta tarea y se sometieron al examen de la Comisión las recomendaciones sustantivas que se exponen en este informe.
