Equipment news

The continual of forestry utilization and woodworking industries is reflected in the increasing demand for informal on new equipment. FAO's Forestry Division, on the recommendation of the FAO Conference, collects such information and sends it on request to member nations. There is also a regular feature UNASYLVA dealing with new equipment, and the Forestry Division appreciates receiving data from manufacturers all over the world. Specifications should be accompanied by clear, sharp photographs (glossy prints) of the equipment FAO, however, can accept no obligation to publish all such information received.

ROADLESS HALF TRACK

ROADLESS HALF TRACK - This equipment, which is interchangeable with wheels, is suitable for fitting to Allis Chalmers, Fordson Major and Massey Harris tractors. By using a specially shortened drawbar and an extra pair of brackets, it is unnecessary to remove either the idler mounting or the swinging drawbar when changing over to pneumatics. The steering, handling and speed of the tractor are unaffected by the changeover.

It can be supplied with booms 3 ½ ft. 5 ½ ft. or 7 ft. in length for digging trenches to these depths. Two types of cutters are available for various trenching jobs, the standard or slicer type for ordinary soil conditions and the super service cutters for digging in extremely hard or rocky soil or frozen ground.

The former cutters are supplied in widths of 6 in. through 20 in. while the super service cutters are supplied in widths of 7 in. through 18 in. Some of the optional accessories available for the machine include the following: a special sprocket which affords more digging power when digging deep and wide trenches; a one-side delivery attachment for removing dirt from the trench to one side only, a bulldozer blade for back-filling the trenches; a crumber attachment for assuring a clean trench bottom.

THE BUSHWACKER

THE BUSHWACKER - The Bushwhacker is a heavy duty machine for clearing land by removing brush, vines, undergrowth and trees. The carrier vehicle is a standard crawler-tractor modified to meet specifications. The base of the operating unit is a fabricated steel frame, rectangular in shape, which is mounted at the approximate longitudinal center of a heavy steel shaft through the frame of the tractor. The base pivots vertically upon the shaft. A Diesel engine mounted at the rear of the cab powers the operating unit which is mounted at the front end of the base.

The flails made of nickel-manganese steel castings are attached to the drum by 1 1/8 in. round links. The 20 flails are staggered on the drum to present a continuous cutting edge 72 in. wide. The gauge wheel which supports the front part of the machine moves in a vertical plane only and regulates the height of the cut. The operating principle of the Bushwacker is that under the impact of the rapidly moving flails the woody fibers of all growth are ruptured, the stalks or trunks broken and the whole reduced to mulch material which is deposited upon the cleared ground.

The flail heads are 6 ½ in. wide weigh 19 ½ lb. and travel around the drum at a speed of 11,550 f p. m. The limiting factor on the Bushwacker performance is the tree diameter and practical ranges are from 5 in to 6 in. for hardwoods from 5 in. to 8 in. for softer woods.

Rate of production varies with operating conditions. Where growth is heavy to medium the tractor moves in low gear at a forward speed of 1½ m.p.h. At this rate the machine will clear an acre in one hour of continuous operation.

BRUSH CONTRACTOR

BRUSH CONTRACTOR - This brush cutter is suitable for cutting heavy ( 3 to 4 in. in diameter) and thin brush alike. The saw itself is tillable in any direction singe the tubing fits in a loose socket at one end; it can sweep in front of the operator at the flexible joint covered by the operator's hand. The shorter tubing is swiveled near the engine and allows cutting overhead within the reach of the whole tubing length. The 1 h.p engine handles all general brush cutting, a 2 ½ h.p. is also available. The difference in weight is only 4 lb.

P.P.K. EARTH DRILL

P.P.K. EARTH DRILL - The earth drill P.P.K. is a type of chain saw; it is mounted on a motor which replaces the cutter bar - the main feature of the mechanical saw. The earth drill consists of an Archimedes screw mounted on a spindle of adjustable height. The instrument can drill holes of from 30 to 50 cm. in diameter and of a depth of up to 1 m. The shape of the holes is strictly cylindrical.

Etablissements P. P. K. 45-47 Boulevard St., Denis, Coubevoie-Seine, France.

ROTAVATOR

ROTAVATOR - The Rotavator is attached as an integral part of the tractor and is rotor driven from the power take-off. The rotating action of the blades, which revolve in the same direction as the land wheels creates a forward thrust and actually assists the whole unit forward. A screw adjusted depth wheel controls the working depth of the blades up to a depth of 10 in.

The framework of the Rotavator is entirely constructed of fabricated steel and steel castings. Two speeds area provided for the rotor, but a further range of gearing can be obtained by changing the sprocket on the intermediate shaft Alternate rotor widths of 7 ft. or 8 ft. are available. Heavy duty blades can be supplied for land clearing and cutting undergrowth in the forest.
