Equipment news

The continual development of forest utilization and woodworking industries is reflected in the increasing demand for information on new equipment. FAO's Forestry Division, on the recommendation of the FAO Conference, collects such information and sends it on request to member governments. The Forestry Division would appreciate receiving data from manufacturers all over the world; specifications should be accompanied by clear, sharp photographs (glossy prints). FAO, however, can accept no obligation to publish all such information received.

PRECISION DENDROMETER

PRECISION DENDROMETER. - An instrument for measuring tree growth. It consists of a Starrett No. 655-FL inch dial gauge micrometer bolted across the top of a small T - shaped hardwood platform so that the face of the platform can be held against the screw heads in making measurements. The two pieces of the platform must be securely bolted together to prevent warping. Three brass furniture corners, arranged in a triangle on the face of the platform, enable the operator to return the instrument to exactly the same position on the screw heads at each re-measurement. The micrometer reads accurately to 0.001 in. and it is possible to interpolate between the graduations. Each revolution of the large hand measures 0.1 in. The spindle has a 3 ft. range of movement which is recorded by the 0.1 in. graduations on the small counter on the dial.

A template (1.5 x 8.5 in.) is used for a uniform spacing of the 3 round-headed brass screws on the trunk of the tree so that they are aligned with the brass corners on the platform. The screws penetrate the trunk to a depth of approximately 0.5 in. The screws can be reset if necessary to compensate for the radial growth of the trunk. The dendrometer measures the distance between the plane formed by the permanent screw heads and the surface of the bark. This distance decreases with growth.

Error resulting from wear caused by the spindle repeatedly striking the bark surface is prevented by attaching a small metal or plastic square or disc on the dead bark at each contact point; a plastic wood disc is shown here. For checking instrumental error at each remeasurement, the investigator should place a set of 3 screws on another tree and then sink a fourth screw to a depth of 0.5 in. into the wood at the spindle contact point. Readings on the check tree will give the correction for instrumental errors. The dead bark should be reduced to about 3/16 in. thick before the screws are installed.

The dendrometer provides the forester with an accurate and rapid means of measuring the seasonal trend of changes in radial growth up to 0.001 in. resulting from the impact of treatments such as thinning fire, pruning, fertilization and irrigation. The annual increase in radial growth resulting from these treatments cannot be measured accurately by the use of conventional methods. Only the instrument is needed for the readings but a set of screws must be permanently fixed in each tree used in research. Readings can be made on at least 200 trees in a single day.

U.S.F.S. TOMCAT LOG TRACTOR

U.S.F.S. TOMCAT LOG TRACTOR. - Arch tractor for skidding logs designed and built by the U.S. Forest Service. One of its principal objects is to provide ample track area for operation on wet muddy ground. On field tests over difficult and very muddy ground it has already proved to have the following advantages over conventional crawler tractors: 1) can haul log loads up to 50 per Gent larger; 2) by carrying its arch it requires less power output than by trailing it; it can also be backed into difficult places and lined up for yarding out quicker than a trailer arch and reduces damage to young trees; 3) it has the weight and stability to yard out a larger object; 4) with proper power and gear combination and because of elimination of the trailer arch, it can return empty upgrade in at least one gear higher than conventional rigs; 5) because of its wide tracks and well-proportioned track length span, it stays on top of muddy ground and continues operation when other types would bog down; it also improves the roadway for other tractors. Specifications: overall length 18 ft.; overall width 10 ft. 4 in.; height ground to top of arch 12 ft. Comparison: F. S. THE CARCO "G" WINCH

THE CARCO "G" WINCH. - This winch designed for logging and general constructions fits tractors in the 80 to 120 belt-HP range. New features include concealed cable controls, smooth braking action, and choice of gears for high or low range of line speeds. Exterior nuts and belts are recessed, drum flanges are shrouded to minimize cable damage. An automatic brake is available with the Carco "G" winch as extra equipment. This brake allows the operator to set his brake before pulling in the load. The brake takes effect as the tractor clutch is disengaged, preventing the load from slipping back. It is said to be especially useful in arch logging.

PLYCOR ONE-MAN ELECTROGLUER

PLYCOR ONE-MAN ELECTROGLUER. - Designed for fast, efficient high-frequency gluing of lumber cores, and requires only one operator who handles the glue spreading, lays up the stock and removes the finished cores. This equipment is capable of producing from 3,000 to 6,000 sq. ft. of core stock per day.

The One-Man Electrogluer is equipped with both top end side pressure cylinders and a Westinghouse 5 kw RF generator. Both machines are fully shielded. The 2-station lay-up table is pivoted in the center so that one half is in curing position inside the press while the other half extends in front forming the lay-up table, which is motor-driven. When the top cylinders move upwards they lift the top electrodes, the side pressure cylinders, and the back stop thereby leaving the pivoting table free and unencumbered so that the operator can revolve it. This brings the freshly laid-up material into curing position and delivers the glued-up core to him. A glue spreader on a conveyor equipped with gravity roll infeed and conveyor chain out-feed is also included.
