Forests cover around 28 percent of the total land area of Romania. In 1995, biomass in the form of forest residues, wood residues from wood processing industry and agricultural biomass took the share of 2.3 percent of primary energy consumption. An analysis on the annual potential of biomass for energy purpose, shows that by the year 2010, the annual wood residues utilised could increase by 25-94PJ, agricultural residues by 119PJ and SRF by 764PJ. The potential total annual use of biomass could be over 1,000PJ by the year 2020.
