This study was carried out under the leadership of Robert Scholes, CSIR in South Africa, over the period 1999-2000. For the survey of environmental information systems he collaborated with M.R. van der Merwe and A.M. van Tienhoven.
In addition, numerous national experts from Botswana, Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe contributed their time and expertise in ensuring that the country assessments were as complete as possible and the implementation plan recommendations were relevant to national priorities.
The overall direction for the activity was provided by Jeff Tschirley, GTOS Programme Director. The final editing and the document layout was done by Reuben Sessa and Stephanie Vertecchi.
Support for the project was provided by the government of Finland through a trust fund (Gcp/Int/696/Fin) with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. Additional resources were provided by the GTOS sponsors - FAO, ICSU, UNEP, UNESCO, and WMO.
