Process for developing a vision for forests and forestry 2050 and other outcome documents
The XIV World Forestry Congress (WFC) aims to build a new vision – a new way of thinking and acting – for the future of forests and forestry in sustainable development at all levels. Investing in forests and forestry is investment in people and their livelihoods, especially the rural poor, youth and women. In turn, this is investment in sustainable development and in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.
The following key aspects of forests and forestry will feature strongly in the future of forests:
• improving food security and livelihoods
• integrating forests and other land uses
• making forests a solution to climate change
These key aspects for a new vision for forests and forestry were identified in the lead-up to the XIV World Forestry Congress through a consultative process involving forest-sector stakeholders at the global, regional and national levels, FAO’s regional forestry commissions, officials in the host country, and FAO staff, as well as the international Advisory Committee for the XIV WFC. Forests and forestry face many other challenges, but the strong view obtained through the consultative process was that it was important to identify a contained set of key aspects to help focus Congress deliberations.
The inputs of Congress participants will be used to build the vision document as well as the other two outcome documents, especially through the discussions and outcomes of the High-level Dialogue, plenary sessions, technical sub-themes and special events.
FAO, guided by the Presidency, will prepare a draft Congress outcome document, which will include, inter alia, conclusions and recommendations. The drafting of the vision document will aim at representing the consensus views of the Congress.
All Congress participants will be able to engage in the process to develop the vision document by making their voices heard at plenary sessions, sub-theme sessions and special events, and through other means that will be publicized during the Congress.
