Did you know? Tips for accessing AGORA

10 Jul 2023

Since 2003, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has led the Access to Global Online Research in Agriculture (AGORA) collection. The aim of the programme is to improve the quality and effectiveness of agricultural research, education and training in low-income countries.

Is my institution eligible?
Not-for-profit institutions including from eligible countries, areas and territories, can register for free or low-cost access to international scientific journals, publications and databases. Visit https://www.research4life.org/access/eligibility/  for more information.

How can I register?
Registration information for AGORA can be found here: https://registration.research4life.org/register/default.aspx.

After registration, a welcome message will be sent to the director and library contacts of the institution. If you are registering on behalf of your institution, please alert them that they will receive an email from Research4Life if the registration is approved. The director and library contacts will receive a license agreement with the welcome message. They will need to fill it out, sign and return soon after receipt.

Once registered for AGORA, your institution will have access to all five Research4life collections.

Login with ID and password
After returning the signed licence agreement, the institution’s director and/or librarian will be contacted with login information, including a unique username and password and detailed instructions on accessing and using the AGORA content portal. The institutional login details to AGORA can be shared with all staff of the registered institution, including researchers, teaching staff, administrative staff and students. They are all eligible to access the AGORA collection. On-site visitors may also use the collection if a staff member logs in with their account, as long as they abide by the guidelines within the license agreement.

It is important to remember not to share your AGORA username and password with non-institutional members as this will result in the suspension of your institutional credentials.

Utilising an IP-based login
Institutions can access AGORA through IP-based login, which does not require a username and password to login to AGORA and the other Research4life collections. For an institution to register for an IP login to AGORA, they must first register the fixed IPs in the IP registry.

After this, they need to send these IPs to Research4life at [email protected] for them to be set up in the Research4life authentication system.

Please follow the short video on how to register your Institutional IPs in the IP Registry and inform [email protected] when the details are correct.

After successful setup, institutional members, within the specified IP ranges, can access Research4life without entering a username and password.

What if I do not know my institution’s login information?
Each registered institution is given a single username and password upon joining AGORA. If a user does not have the login information, the best course of action is to contact the institution's librarian or director, who would have received the welcome message from Research4Life with the login details.

What if no one at my institution knows the login information?

If a library contact and/ or the director have changed at a registered institution, and the ID and password are lost, staff of the institution can contact  [email protected] and request Research4Life to resend the ID and password to the new librarian and/or director.
