Avaclim Project: The Association ''France et Maroc au Coeur'' has developed allotment gardens in the arid provinces of Chichaoua and Taroudant in Morocco

The commune of Mzouda, located in the province of Chichaoua, about 74 km from Marrakech, is a plain area close to the mountains.

In 2018, in the commune of Mzouda, 72 allotments were created using agroecology approaches: self-fertilizing mounds, compost, and manure, optimized irrigation (with jars), tree planting, green fertilizers, crop association and rotation, biological plant protection, insect hotel, etc.

These agroecological practices have led to an increase in biodiversity. The initiative has led to better use of available water, and to an increase in the quantity of water by collecting rainwater.

Elected officials and institutional leaders have seen the interest and many requests from local associations and from other regions have come to learn about agroecology.

The gardening activities are carried out as a family (men, women, children). Children followed grandparents and mothers into the gardens, providing an intergenerational link. The women who work together in the gardens, leave the domestic sphere and exchange on their daily life. Some isolated mothers have dared to work on farms (harvesting peas, beans, etc.) after their training. The improvement in the living conditions of the families has led to relative food autonomy.

This sheet is produced within the framework of the Avaclim project, which aims to create the necessary conditions for the deployment of agroecology in drylands. The international solidarity association CARI coordinates the Avaclim project while Agrisud International is in charge of its implementation in Morocco.
