The initiative is located in the Niayes region, bordering the maritime fringe of northern Senegal (Dakar, Thiès, Louga and Saint-Louis).

The Federation of Vegetable Producers of the Niayes Zone (FPMN), with the support of the Wallonia-Brussels cooperation, has initiated a treatment and valorization of the waste of the slaughterhouses of Dakar.  The compost production unit was initiated in 2011 on a small scale and after several trials in the Farmer Fiels Schools for three years, in 2015 the production increased. With the 2,400 members of the FPMN, it is about 6,000 ha of land valorized in addition to raising the level of fertility, rotation possibilities, and fallow. The inputs used in the composting process are mainly the contents of animal manure, livestock effluents and green waste. The main phases of composting are: sorting to remove non-degradable materials, controlled fermentation for 4 to 5 months, turning for aeration and homogenization of the compost and maturation. The unit has a capacity of 400 tons per year and the slaughterhouse can produce up to 9 tons per day (300 heads per day and about 30 kilograms of rumen content per unit).

The local production of compost allows producers to access a cheaper, efficient and traceable organic fertilizer. This ensures better availability and access to fertilizers. Moreover, the fertilization of the land allows a better yield of the productions and thus better sales for the market gardeners.

Moreover, this compost nourishes poor soils, favoring yields and the quality of the products. The use of organic fertilizers promotes consumer confidence in local and quality products.
