Better management of crop pests in Burkina Faso

BioProtect's mission is to contribute to the development of organic agriculture in Burkina Faso through the production and dissemination of biopesticide production methods for the ecological control of crop diseases and pests. BioProtect is an Economic Interest Group (EIG) established in 2011 to produce biopesticides. The production process is based on raw materials such as neem, herbs, garlic, and chili. Almost all the raw materials are sourced locally. The formulas passed on to the producers enable them to produce effective products directly on their farms by making use of the resources available on the farm.

Currently, the EIG accompanies almost 4,000 producers in eco/organic production and marketing through Participatory Guarantee System (PGS) certifications. The entity supports producers to produce their own inputs through technology transfer processes. This supports the farmers' empowerment vis-à-vis the outside world.

For processing, BioProtect collaborates with the Institute of Research in Applied Sciences and Technologies (IRSAT), which provides stills, an oil extraction press, a microbiology laboratory, and a production platform. Finally, as a member of the Africa-Europe Platform for Agricultural Research and Development, BioProtect works with African and European research institutes to improve the quality of organic amendments.

This fact sheet is produced as part of the Avaclim project, which aims to create the necessary conditions for the deployment of agroecology in dryland areas. The international solidarity association CARI coordinates the Avaclim project.
