Master’s degree: ‘’Agroecology, An Approach to Rural Sustainability’’, for the period 2022–2023

The world agrifood system is currently undergoing an acute crisis caused by serious food insecurity and the low profitability of agricultural activity, along with the negative impacts resulting from the current organizational structure of the system in affecting both human health and the environment.

International organizations, especially FAO and the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Right to Adequate Food, Olivier de Schutter, have been recognizing and promoting the spread of agroecology as a way of managing agricultural systems capable of combating hunger and rural poverty. It improves food security and enhances the living conditions in rural areas in general, especially in developing countries, promoting adequate, healthy, and quality food supply - without degrading the natural resource endowment. An act that will depend on promoting more sustainable agricultural techniques and better food production within relocalized agri-food systems.

Agroecology, as a practical tool and as a scientific approach, addresses through its three dimensions (ecological-productive, socioeconomic, and political-cultural) the various forms of transition to more sustainable agrifood systems, starting from the farm to the organizational structures of consumption and public policies. The complex and transdisciplinary approach is an essential part of Agroecology - to address the problems of the agricultural sector, the rural environment, and the consumption of healthy food.

The understanding of ecological processes and the role of traditional and modern forms of sustainable agriculture, together with the understanding of the social and political processes of the organization of agri-food systems, are the basis for recognizing trends and accompanying agroecological transition processes at different scales and from the three dimensions.

The methodologies of analysis and participatory accompaniment of agroecological transition processes are a fundamental part of this master's degree, which has a trajectory that has made it an international scientific reference since it began in 1996. This master's degree is carried out in collaboration with the University of Cordoba and the Pablo de Olavide University. It therefore focuses on strengthen critical and complex view and praxis on agrifood systems and forms of agroecological social transition through collective social action and public policies.
