The FAO's Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS) Programme recently held a workshop on the fusion of traditional knowledge and innovation in agriculture. Representatives from GIAHS sites in the Philippines, Morocco, Brazil, Bangladesh, Italy, Japan, and Spain shared experiences on how combining ancient agricultural practices with modern technologies can enhance biodiversity conservation, food security, and cultural preservation.
The workshop, funded by Japan, is part of a series that began in 2021. It highlighted the critical role of traditional knowledge in maintaining sustainable food systems and rural livelihoods, while emphasizing the value of innovation in addressing contemporary environmental and social challenges.
