Agroecology: the roots of resistance

Nowadays, agroecology is clearly focused on bringing about sustainability to food, concentrates and fibers’ production. However, a bigger picture of major social, economic and social drivers that move food systems beyond the current unsustainable, industrial agriculture is also present. With its basis rooted into ecosystems, agroecological science has become a powerful tool to change food systems when appropriately combined with an understanding of how social changes occur. In this paper, the origins of agroecology are traced back to Mexico in the 70s, as a resisting movement against the Green Revolution. Agroecology has gone beyond the development of better, safer and more environmentally friendly production techniques. Agroecology is more than a production method, such as organic or ecological agriculture are. Agroecology is also a social movement with a strong base that promotes justice, access, adaptation, resistance and sustainability.
