Agroecological farmers in India: Sireesha’s story

This video tells the story of Sireesha - one of the thousands of women and men farmers in Andhra Pradesh, India, practicing agroecology in Farmer Field Schools facilitated by the Andhra Pradesh Community managed Natural Farming Programme and FAO.

Through agroecology and FFS, Sireesha and her family improved their incomes; consume healthy and local food, and sell vegetables produced without pesticides to their local community. As an FFS trainer, Sireesha encourages other farmers to adopt Natural Farming by testing it and experimenting by themselves with positive results.

Agroecology is a holistic and integrated approach that applies ecological and social principles to design and manage sustainable agriculture and food systems. Farmer Field School (FFS) has been one of the most successful approaches developed and promoted by FAO over the last 30 years, empowering farmers to become better decision-makers in their own farming systems. Practical field exercises using direct observation, discussion, and decision-making encourage learning-bydoing.
