Agroecology and politics: how to achieve sustainability? On the necessity of an agroecological policy

Reflection on politics done from the field of agroecology is scarce. However, the wide range of agroecological movements and experiences taking place at several levels of public administration suggest that there is a need to develop the political aspects of agroecology’s theory. Agroecology has yet to develop tools and criteria to analyze national and regional strategies where political aspects play a crucial role. This paper contributes to fill this gap by providing the arguments why agroecology should engage in policy. The first argument is based on the premise that agroecosystems, as socioecological constructions, are the result of power relations. In second place, the paper highlights the close relationship between the dynamics of politics and the agroecosystems, as well as the role that the former plays in agroecological transitions. Finally, the paper provides a first diagnostic of the global food system situation as the wide framework within which agroecological experiences will develop.
