''Biofertilizers and other technologies available to address the Fertilizer Crisis in the Latin America and Caribbean Region''

Webinar Recordings | 9 June 2022.

Fertilizer prices have increased in recent months due to several factors, such as high energy prices. On the other hand, major exporters, including China, Russia, and Egypt, have reduced exports to safeguard domestic supply. Russia exports 12.6% of total fertilizer, so further price increases can be expected as the Russian-Ukrainian conflict adds to fears of global shortages.  Interruption in fertilizer production or distribution could affect its availability and consequently global food production.

Rising fertilizer prices are projected to continue until at least mid-2022, so accelerating innovations (such as the use of biofertilizers and other technologies) and policies in response to rapidly rising fertilizer prices and discussing ways to mitigate the effects of rising food and input prices on the region is part of what is meant by "better production," and what can help Latin America and the Caribbean consolidate its role as the world's largest net food exporter.

The event ''Biofertilizers and other available technologies to face the Fertilizer Crisis in the Latin American and Caribbean Region'' aims to present different options, good practices and lessons learned on the use and management of biofertilizers and other technological alternatives for the agricultural sector that are currently available to face the crisis of high fertilizer prices.

Objectives of the webinar

1. To raise awareness of the importance of biofertilizers and other technologies to face the rising prices of fertilizers and as part of a strategy for better production.

2. To share experiences on biofertilizers and other alternatives available in the region.

3. Identify the catalysts and/or barriers, from the private-public sphere, that influence the positioning and scaling up of the use of biofertilizers and other technological alternatives.

It is expected to have a wide participation of professionals from the Ministries of Agriculture of the countries of the Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) region, as well as various stakeholders from research institutes, members of the LAC soil community of practice, producer associations and regional or global networks.
