Management of phosphate fertilizers for feeding the world sustainably

Phosphorus, an essential nutrient crucial for all living organisms, including humans, also plays a pivotal role in agriculture production. However, excessive levels of phosphorus have a significant impact on species and ecosystems with cascading effects on soil quality and biodiversity and consequently ecosystem services and crop production.

The webinar “Management of phosphate fertilizers for feeding the world sustainably” jointly organized by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the International Fertilizer Association (IFA) that took place on 14 February 2024; aims to explore sustainable phosphorus management practices that promote healthy soils and reduce nutrient loss/waste through the recovery and reuse of phosphorus.

The webinar hosted a panel of distinguished speakers who shared their expertise and experiences on this important topic. The speakers provided crucial innovative insights on Ecological foundation of sustainable food systems, Global trends in phosphorus use efficiency, Phosphorus recovery and reuse and Food Production and Nutrient Loss.
