Highlights from 10 Years of CCRP in West Africa

"CCRP has funded agricultural research and development projects in West Africa (Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger) since 2006. As one of the poorest regions in the world, challenges certainly abound, but a wealth of opportunities also exist. Among these are highly diverse and robust major crops such as pearl millet, sorghum, and cowpea; nutritious minor crops such as fonio, bambara nut, and orange-fleshed sweet potato; livestock and trees that offer potential for systems integration; and most importantly, committed scientists, students, farmers, farmer organizations, development agents, and food processors. These women and men work together in CCRP’s West Africa community of practice (CoP) to foster agro-ecological intensification of sorghum- and pearl millet-based production systems, to develop local seed systems and value chains, and thereby to improve livelihoods and nutrition in the region. Over the past decade, the project portfolio of the West Africa CoP has been increasingly oriented towards systems-oriented research approaches based on agro-ecological principles. Local knowledge and farmer innovation have always been important, and farmer voice has become stronger with time. The first research project led by a farmers’ organization – supported by researchers – was approved in 2012. The CoP’s main aims are to offer an array of AEI options for the diverse farmers in the region, and to support farmers and farming communities to choose options that fit best in their local context. On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of CCRP in West Africa, this book highlights selected project results and initial impacts achieved. CCRP is pleased to support transformative efforts in the West Africa CoP and invites you to experience them."
