Agroecology Knowledge Hub

Database

Agroecology plays an important role in contributing to the eradication of hunger and extreme poverty, and as a means to facilitate the transition to more productive, sustainable and inclusive food systems. Creating a greater awareness of agroecology and its advantages is an important step to help policy-makers, farmers and researchers to apply this approach to achieve a world without hunger.

The database provides a starting point to organize the existing knowledge on agroecology, collecting articles, videos, case studies, books and other important material in one place. The objective is to support policy-makers, farmers, researchers and other relevant stakeholders through knowledge exchange and knowledge transfer. The database is a ‘living process’ that is constantly being updated.

Our findings and recommendations are relatively simple, yet profound. There is an urgent need for mulitlateral development banks to: 1. Set up internal procedures to identify and quantify the ecological impact “externalities,” especially at the agricultural loan application stage to show the True Cost of production; 2. This one-size-fits-all industrial model of agriculture is being pursued at the expense of small-scale farmers who produce 70% of Africa’s food by using, in many cases, sustainable agriculture methods, also known as agroecology. Studies show that agroecology leads to increases in food productivity and yield which are comparable to, or...

Agroecology is a promising alternative to industrial agriculture, with the potential to avoid the negative social and ecological consequences of input-intensive production. Transitioning to agroecological production is, however, a complex project that requires diverse contributions from the outside of scientific institutions. Agroecologists therefore collaborate with traditional producers and agroecological movements....
