Hybrid event to mark the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste (IDAFLW)

Rome (Italy), Hybrid Event, 29/09/2023

Reducing food loss and waste (FLW) plays a crucial role in ensuring better nutrition for the world’s current and future generations. It presents a triple win opportunity, for the climate, for the availability of nutritious food and for improving the overall sustainability of our agrifood systems.

Globally, an estimated 13.2 percent of food produced is lost after harvest and before it reaches retail shelves, and a further 17 percent is wasted in households, food services and in retail.  The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development calls for halving per capita global food waste at the retail and consumer levels and reducing food losses along production and supply chains.

To discuss how to achieve progress on this vital issue, a hybrid event will be held at FAO Headquarters in Rome, beginning at 15:55 on 29 September.

FAO  has just developed a new app to convert a methodology to measure food losses at the farm level. The Food Loss App -FLAPP- is the result of a study on the losses that occurred in different value chains last year, built on the data collected from visits to producers, marketers and processors in various communities in the countries to obtain information on agricultural activities of the products that will allow to identify the bottlenecks that generated the losses and translate insights into action.

FLAPP’s main objective is to help designing targeted policies and incentives that in the future will allow losses to be reduced, directly impacting UN Sustainable Goal Target 12.3.

Check the FLAPP Video to learn more  here.

At 18:05 there will be a cooking demonstration by Chef Leyla Fathallah
