FAO in the Pacific works with national governments and other stakeholders to identify priority areas for national and regional assistance. The Office is responsible for developing, overseeing and implementing programmes and projects to address food security, nutrition, agriculture and rural development priorities. In accordance with specific country issues and identified priority needs, the results were delivered through fostering strong partnerships with relevant government ministries, the private sector, farmers' organizations, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). In addition, FAO works closely with other UN agencies as well as the Council of Regional Organisations in the Pacific (CROP) under various projects and initiatives.

Headquartered in Apia, Samoa, the FAO Subregional Office for the Pacific Islands was established in 1996 to coordinate the work of FAO in the Pacific region. The Office covers the following Member Nations: 

The Cook Islands  |  Fiji  |  Federated States of Micronesia  |  Kiribati  |  Nauru  |  Niue  |  Palau | The Marshall Islands  |  Samoa  |  Solomon Islands  |  Tonga  |  Tuvalu  |  Vanuatu. Tokelau is an Associate Member.

FAO has country offices in Suva, Fiji; Honiara, Solomon Islands; Port Vila, Vanuatu; and Nuku'alofa, Tonga. These offices are staffed with Assistant FAO Representatives who lead programming and engage with governments and development partners.

Areas of work

The work of FAO in the Pacific Islands region is organized in line with FAO Strategic Framework 2022-31 that seeks to support the 2030 Agenda through the transformation to MORE efficient, inclusive, resilient and sustainable agri-food systems for better production, better nutrition, a better environment, and a better life, leaving no one behind.
