FAO in Bangladesh

Inauguration of new Representation after 44 years in the old office

13/03/2022

‘New office, new journey’ was the message from FAO Director-General QU Dongyu who officially opened the new FAO Representation building in Dhaka.

The DG jointly opened the new office along with the honourable Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Mohammad Abdur Razzaque MP. A number of diplomats and high-level government officials attended the ceremony.

Bangladesh joined FAO in 1973, two and a half years after the country became independent. In 1978, FAO opened its Representation in the Dhanmondi area of Dhaka and had been there ever since. The new larger and modern building is in Banani, near the diplomatic quarter.

The DG thanked FAO staff for their commitment and contribution to FAO’s many successes in Bangladesh and wished them and the office well, remarking that the new office marked a new beginning and a new journey.  Nur Khondaker, Assistant FAO Representative, who joined FAO in 2006, said: “We have many memories of the Dhanmondi office. It’s been our home for many decades but it’s time to say goodbye.”

Staff enjoyed a final farewell party in March before moving over to the new premises.
